Scaling Smart City Solutions: A Roadmap for Local Authorities
This roadmap for scaling supports local authorities in successfully transferring and sustainably consolidating Smart City solutions. It thus drives the cooperative development and innovative transfer of municipal digital solutions for smart cities and regions.
This roadmap addresses precisely this challenge, focusing on the central question of how successful innovation processes from the digital economy can be anchored and transferred into the governance processes of Smart City projects. The current state of research across various private-sector contexts reveals a broad discussion about the critical factors for scaling digital solutions. Through examples of successful start-ups and scale-ups in both public and private sectors, the literature also demonstrates that digital projects tend to develop their own dynamics, deviating from traditional project patterns. Therefore, we have chosen the format of a roadmap to help you find the right path for your municipality.
The roadmap is divided into phases and workstreams and is structured as follows:

How to Automatically Translate a Website from German to English in Popular Web Browsers
This digital solution was originally developed for the 11,000 German municipalities. Due to strong international interest, we provide guidance below on using automatic translation to access the website. While navigating foreign-language websites can be challenging, modern web browsers include built-in translation features that allow you to automatically translate entire webpages from German to English with just a few clicks. Here's how to do it in the most popular browsers:
- Google Chrome:
- Microsoft Edge:
- Mozilla Firefox:
- Safari (Mac):
Chrome automatically detects foreign languages and prompts a translation bar. Simply click “Translate” when the prompt appears. If not, right-click on the page and select “Translate to English.”
Edge also recognises different languages and displays a translation option. Click “Translate” in the address bar. You can set it to always translate German to English if preferred.
Firefox requires the Firefox Translations extension. Once installed, click the translation icon in the address bar and choose “English” as the target language.
Safari provides a Translate button in the address bar when it detects a foreign language. Click it and select “English.”
Once automatic translation is activated, you have full access to the roadmap in your language. We wish you an inspiring and helpful journey through the roadmap.
